Conduction Gcse Science Coursework

Physics is the branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter, energy and forces and motion. If you can manage to gain a good grasp of Physics you will have a decent understanding of how the world and the devices that are in it function. We look in detail at topics such as forces, energy, radiation, waves, electricity and electromagnetism.

How are students assessed for this course?

We currently follow the Edexcel Physics linear course at GCSE and students are assessed through two exams only at the end of Year 11. Paper one is a 2 hour paper and counts towards two thirds of the final GCSE grade. Paper two is a 1 hour paper and this counts towards one third of the final GCSE grade. There is no coursework in this Physics course.

The importance of practical work

In Physics we undertake as much practical work as possible in order to develop these important skills. Students are assessed on practical skills in their final Physics exams. Students also need to develop these skills for further study at A Level Physics and for University if they choose to go down this route.

What home learning do you expect students to do?

Students will generally receive one piece of homework per week in Physics and we expect this to be the absolute bare minimum. On a weekly basis, pupils should be going through their notes to check that they understand what has been covered in class. To complement their class notes, pupils should also read their textbook and use their revision guides at the same time in order to consolidate their learning.

  • Parents can help by ensuring that their son/daughter reviews the learning they have done in Physics on a weekly basis. They should make sure that a 20-30 minute slot is allocated (preferably at the weekend) in order for their son/daughter to read back through the notes and matching textbook notes.
  • Any questions that are raised from this review of the previous weeks learning should be taken to the subject teacher at some time during the following week of school. If you can encourage this to happen it will really benefit the learning process.
  • All past paper materials will be available on the school VLE and it would be extremely beneficial if you could print some questions off and get your son /daughter to have a go at them outside of school. The more practice that pupils can do with exam questions, the better their exam technique will be and ultimately the better their grade will be at the end of the course.

Assessment information:

At the end of every section or sub-section pupils will have an assessment to enable us to track their progress in the topic and over time. The assessments will be made up from previous past paper questions so that they are robust, challenging and informative of the level a particular pupil is working at. In the autumn term there is likely to be a minimum of two assessments. Two in the energy resources and energy transfer topic and possibly one in the electricity topic depending how far pupils get into the topic. Things are subject to change on a weekly basis depending on trips, extra-curricular activities etc.

Assessments for mid and end of topic tests are likely to be between 30 and 45 minutes in length.

There will be an end of year assessment for Year 9 pupils that will assess all of the topic areas that has been covered during Year 9. This will inform summer work and identify areas to improve. This is likely to be at the back end of June in the summer term.

NOTE: For all tests and assessments that pupils take, parents/guardians/carers will be warned about this at least a week in advance of the test via parentmail.

Pupils will have a mock exam in December before they go on work experience and potentially another mock exam before Easter to enable to easily identify any areas of weakness.

Conduction

Heat energy can move through a substance by conduction [conduction: The transfer of heat energy through a material - without the material itself moving. ]. Metals are good conductors of heat but non-metals and gases are usually poor conductors of heat. Poor conductors of heat are called insulators. Heat energy is conducted from the hot end of an object to the cold end.

The electrons in piece of metal can leave their atoms and move about in the metal as free electrons. The parts of the metal atoms left behind are now charged metal ions. The ions are packed closely together and they vibrate continually. The hotter the metal, the more kinetic energy [kinetic energy: The energy that moving objects have. ] these vibrations have. This kinetic energy is transferred from hot parts of the metal to cooler parts by the free electrons. These move through the structure of the metal, colliding with ions as they go.
